WHY DO I NEED TO REGISTER A DOMAIN NAME? A Domain Name System (DNS) is essentially the phone book for any network – including the Internet. Every time you are surfing the web, whether you realize it or not, you are using DNS. Without this option, you would have to remember every system’s IP address to visit the particular site you wanted. For instance, instead of remembering a name like www.google.com, you would have to remember 74.125.239.82. Instead of www.amazon.com, you would have to remember 205.251.242.54 – and every backup IP address that they use for load balancing the traffic. For something as fundamental to the Internet as DNS has become, most users have little or no understanding of how it works. In fact, they may never even know that it exists until it stops working. Having a web presence starts with the registration of your domain name (web address). You've taken the first step to realize the potential of a Web presence. We're here to make it as easy and rewarding as possible every step of the way. A Web presence begins with a Web address or domain name – such as yourcompany.com or yourorganization.org. Once you've chosen an address, you can build a Web site. Your Web site can tell potential customers about your products, tell them how to reach you, share photos with your friends, post your resume, anything you want. It's just an efficient and exciting way to deliver information and ideas to large amount of people. You can also get a personalized or professional email address at your Web address – such as sales@yourcompany.com or yourname@yourcompany.com. It's simply a lot more memorable and professional than myname40@yahoo.com. Whether you're trying to grow a business, share your ideas or creativity or simplify your life, a Web presence can help. We can too. If you have any questions: Why Do You Need A Domain Name? > Increases your name recognition > Makes it easy for your customers to remember your address > Indicates you are a serious Internet player > Helps brand your image > Adds a level of trust and integrity to your site > Many search engines refuse to list pages from free sites > Some search engines will only index the first page of a domain site > Domain names containing 'keywords' aid in higher search engine ranking > Allows you to use your domain address (www.yourname.com) and virtual email addresses (yourname@yourname.com) on your business cards and letterhead. Once a domain name has been registered, it is no longer available. The most popular and easily-remembered domain names are being reserved daily, at the rate of one domain name every 5 seconds! At that rate, in the near future, only obscure domain names will be available to the general public. > Avoids somebody else from registering the name you want. > Lets you change your current email provider and still keep the same email address > Protects your Internet advertising investment from failure of your Internet Service Provider

What is a SSL Certificate?

A secure certificate is a document used to certify that an individual or organization is who they say they are. A certificate exposes to the public the true company name and full web domain name that the certificate is registered to and carries with it both creation and expiration dates. A secure certificate transmits data on the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) which encrypts the data using very long decryption strings and other encryption technology.

The strength of the encryption can vary but most commonplace is 128 bit, which is strong enough to prevent data from being deciphered even using the latest technology and hardware. Encryption of webpage data transmitted over the Internet protects the sender and receiver from being watched by other individuals and is essential to the prevention of credit card fraud and identity theft.

Short for Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL uses a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data − a public key known to everyone and a private or secret key known only to the recipient of the message. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL, and many Web sites use the protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers. By convention, URLs that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http:

What is WHOIS Privacy? (Free with every Domain name registered with us)

When you register a domain name, you are asked to provide up-to-date contact information. This is part of a policy established by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organization that coordinates the world’s domain system. Your information is then stored in a publicly accessible WHOIS database, which can be easily searched and accessed by anyone with an Internet connection. That means anyone can find your personal information, including spammers, marketers, and identity thieves. Scary, right?

A quick WHOIS lookup will provide your personal name and contact details. For example, a search for www.kpm.com.ng might look something like this:

Domain Name: kpm.com.ng

Registrant ID: 71511-NIRA

Registrant Name: Olusegun Kuti

Registrant Organization: KEK Property Management

Registrant Street: 21 Igbosere Road, Lagos Island

Registrant City: Lagos

Registrant State/Province:

Registrant Postal Code:

Registrant Country: NG

Registrant Phone: +234.8035531075

Registrant Phone Ext:

Registrant Email:

However with Whois Privacy Protecting your personal information

WHOIS Privacy allows you to keep your personal information from being published. When someone does a WHOIS lookup for a domain with WHOIS Privacy, the result that comes back looks something like this:

Domain Name: kekhosting.com

Registry Registrant ID:

Registrant Name: Admin Contact

Registrant Organization: PrivateName Services Inc.

Registrant Street: 1100-1200 West 73rd Avenue

Registrant City: Vancouver

Registrant State/Province: BC

Registrant Postal Code: V6P 6G5

Registrant Country: CA

Registrant Phone: +1.6047572882

Registrant Phone Ext:

Registrant Fax: +1.6047572882

If they try to contact you by using that email address, the sender will receive an automated email back which includes a link to an online form to submit their request. Once they do this, then the message is sent to the domain owner. Doing it this way prevents people from spamming the Privacy Contact email address. Only a real person will be able to click the link in the email and fill out their request in the form online.

By protecting your information displayed on WHOIS you can ensure the safety of your information.

Here are some reason why WHOIS privacy is important:

1. Protecting Your Identity

Our moms always told us never to talk to strangers… let alone give them our home address. With unmasked WHOIS your private information is available publicly. This includes your full name and phone number as well. The fact is, anyone with an Internet connection can access this personal information. It’s easy to find with a quick online search. Don’t let that information get into the wrong hands.

2. Block Spam

Having your email address/phone number available publicly makes you an easy target for spam, junkmail, telemarketers and the like. Having a WHOIS protected domain can save your inbox from an influx of unsolicited mail and a voicemail box that’s full to bursting.

3. Avoid Unwanted Offers

Having your information available online can make it easy for anyone to contact you to make offers to buy your domain/website. This can obviously be seen as a pro or a con, but we think that you should be able to choose whether you make this information available. Instead, having a ‘Contact’ section on your website ensures you can direct inquiries to where you want them to go.

Enable WHOIS Privacy for the low cost of  Zero Naira or Dollar!

We at KEK think privacy should be free. It still shocks us that some registrars will charge you to protect your information online. That’s why we never have and never will charge for WHOIS privacy. We even go above and beyond that to make the process quick and easy.
